Trip description
The Machu Picchu by car excursion begins in 1999 as an alternative route due to the limitations of the train to Aguas Calientes. When you take the Machu Picchu by car you contribute to the development of different villages. On this excursion you will have a beautiful panorama filled with landscapes and snow-capped peaks like Chicon, Salkantay and Veronica that shows off our Peruvian Andes with its paved roads and friendly people.
Itinerary
Day 01: Cusco – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo)
After having breakfast at your hotel we pick you up in our private transportation about 7:30 a.m. to take the road towards the Sacred Valley and Urubamba, we will have a short stop in Ollantaytambo before we continue our ascent to the Malaga peak at 4400 m.a.s.l. here we have a quick stop to look at the snow-capped peaks of Veronica and Salkantay before we begin our descend to the high jungle. We reach the village of Santa Maria and continue by following the valley of the Aobamba River until we get to Santa Teresa where we stop for lunch and to fill up on water. We continue our journey in a car until reaching Hidroelectrica from where we begin to walk on a flat trail till Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu pueblo), this trek takes around 3 hours and during the trek we can see Huayna Picchu as well as some of the constructions of Machu Picchu.
Day 02: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Hidroeléctrica – Cusco
The most important day of our journey where we will get to know one of the 7 wonders of the world, Machu Picchu, and we have two different ways to get there. The first is through the Inca Trail, it takes 1.5 hours of uphill trekking to get there. The second one is the tourist bus that takes 30 minutes.
The ones that want to reach Machu Picchu walking need to go at 4:30 a.m. to be able to get to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu to see the sun rise. The ones who opt for the bus takes the first one at 5:30 a.m., so that they can see the spectacular sun rise before visiting Machu Picchu. We have a guided visit to the most important places of Machu Picchu in the urban, religious and agricultural sectors, the tour takes about 3 hours and then you will get free time to visit Machu Picchu by your own before returning to Hidroelectrica in the same way as we did yesterday. We need to be at Hidroelectrica at 2:00 p.m. (you can take the train at 1:00 p.m. at an additional cost if you don’t want to walk), when we get there our transportation will be waiting to take you back to the city of Cusco where we will be arriving around 9:30 p.m.
